What is a modal hijab?
Modal is a botanical fiber spun from beechwood pulp. It sits between silk and cotton — fluid like silk, breathable like cotton, with a soft matte sheen that catches light quietly rather than holding it. For a hijab worn through a long day, that combination is rare.
Where modal comes from
Modal begins as cellulose extracted from sustainably grown beech trees. The pulp is dissolved, spun into a fine filament, and woven into cloth. The process uses far less water than cotton and replants more wood than it consumes.
Why the finish matters
Not all modal is equal. Lannée works with ateliers using closed-loop production — where solvents are recovered and reused, the fiber is traceable from forest to finish, and the finished cloth is certified for skin contact. It is the quietest, most accountable form of the fiber we know.
Modal vs silk vs cotton
Drape
Modal falls fluidly like silk but holds a fold more readily — cotton, by comparison, sits stiff and creases.
Breathability
Modal is more breathable than silk and at least as breathable as cotton, making it forgiving across seasons and climates.
Care
Modal is washable at home in cool water — silk usually is not. It resists shrinkage and holds color longer than cotton.
Sheen
A soft, matte luminance rather than silk's high gloss. The quieter choice for everyday wear.
